My Boss’s Business Partner
He wants to sign the agreement only if I’m part of the bargain. Why should I say ‘No’?
“Yes, the terms can be found in the contract I’ve just given you. The discount isn’t negotiable though,” I say, looking at the man calmly sipping wine in front of me.
We are three at the table: me, him, and my boss.
As interpreter and assistant, my job is to translate my boss’s words to Italian for this man, and back. I know the importance of the transaction: my boss has been clear about it. The company is not going well, and this contract may give us new life.
But the man, Bruno, doesn’t seem convinced, yet.
“Passerai il dopo cena con me?” He asks.
“Will you spend the after-dinner with me?” I think, and luckily stop right before translating it out loud.
“What did he say?” My boss asks.
“I… wait…”
“Che cosa hai detto?” I ask Bruno. -“What did you say?”
No faltering. He looks straight into my eyes and, with his wonderful warm Italian voice, he repeats it.
